Project Portfolio

KAI-WEN KEVIN CHENG

I am a maker, engineer and designer who aims to build teachable machines that learn from human and extend our ability.

Flexible Underactuated Robotic Hand

Feb 2017 – present

Flexible Underactuated Robotic Hand is a 4-fingered adaptive robotic hand.

It fully supports Robot Operating System (ROS) and can be mounted to robots, such as NEXTAGE and Baxter.

The robotic hand is going to become experimental verification of deep RL and all machine learning framework which can teach robot how to learn by itself.

Flexible Underactuated Robotic Hand is a group project cooperating with Japanese robotic research lab.

Documentation Assistant Lamp

May 2016 – present

DA Lamp is a robotic lamp for makers or designers to automatically take pictures of every crucial step and upload to personal documentation database.

It is made of laser-cut frames, 3D printed components and casting servo arms. It is achievable and rapid to make DA Lamp from the open-source design in every makerspaces and fablabs.

DA Lamp has 5 degrees of freedom to move autonomously, and the master system is based on Android. The mobile phone can be mounted on the lampshade, and the built-in camera is capable of recording in the meantime.

The software is under development, including the framework of object recognition and interactive machine learning.

FabDoc

Dec 2015 - present

FabDoc is a web app platform for makers who are eager to document their projects step-by-step.

FabDoc merges with the concept of Git-like version control system. The commit-based workflow supports users to document in detail after the period of work.

To enlarge the scale of current open source hardware projects, FabDoc is under active development of the features, such as forkable branch, supporting teamwork and share.

In each vital step, the only thing you have to record is a photo and a commit while you are busy with making something.

After the period of work and recording, you are able to document more details in browser, and moreover, embed the step into your sites.

Visual Recognition On Pepper Robot

2016

Visual Recogition On Pepper Robot is a applicaion for Pepper to distinguish different objects, human poses and faces.

The algorithms processing videos to obtain a huge amount of the image data which is used for training deep learning models, Inception v3 and FaceNet.

This project was awarded the third prize in the competition of 2016 Pepper robot in Taiwan.

3D-tracking Abduction Game

2014 - 2015

3D-tracking Abduction Game is a low-cost 3D interface game of UFO abduction on Processing.

The original DIY 3D controller was made by kylemcdonald on Instructables with only three sheets of Aluminum foil and Arduino. On L3D cube with the 8x8x8 display, the user-controlled UFO and panic humans can be streamed by Processing over UDP.

This game is my first Arduino project.

BatDrone

2015

BatDrone is an app for people who wants to avoid crime hotspots and protect user on the way home.

The crime data was contributed by Open Data from Taipei City Government. However, the development of BatDrone is now suspended because the government has not maintained data in detail we need.

BatDrone is my first Android app, and this project started at the g0v hackathon in Taiwan. This project was also shared at the weekly meeting of Code for San Franciso.

Push notifications will pop up if user turns on location access and approaches crime hotspots.

Foot Massage Machine

2016

Foot Massage Machine is an inverse delta machine for people who loves foot massage of acupuncture points.

This project was developed with Machines That Make (MTM) modules from CBA at the MIT Media Lab and presented in FabAcademy 2016.

Rearia

2016

Rearia is a set of redesigned earbuds for the hearing aid users to enjoy the quality music over T-Coil mode.

My friend Yen-Tsen Liu started designing Rearia on account of his hearing impairment prohibiting him from having quality music anytime and anywhere. My role in this project is conducting research on materials, components, and T-Coil mode.

Rearia has successfully provided better quality sound. We are going to publish the instruction of how to make DIY version of Rearia.
